US records $83.7bn July foreign capital inflow despite long-term securities sales
The United States recorded an $83.7bn net foreign capital inflow in July, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday afternoon.
Long-term securities moved the other way. Foreign residents bought $40.6bn of long-term US securities, but US residents bought $68.5bn of foreign securities. After adjustments, that left $27.9bn in net foreign sales of long-term securities.
The offset came from shorter-term and bank flows. Foreign holdings of dollar-denominated short-term US securities and other custody liabilities increased by $65.0bn, while banks' net dollar liabilities to foreign residents rose $46.6bn.
The split was uneven. Private foreign investors sold $29.1bn of Treasury bonds and notes and $10.6bn of equities. Foreign official institutions bought $25.5bn and $14.3bn, respectively.
