U.S. investors held $19.3tn of foreign securities at year-end, up $3.5tn in a year
U.S. investors held $19.3tn of foreign securities at the end of 2025, Treasury said Monday, up from $15.8tn a year earlier.
Equities carried most of it. Foreign shares were valued at $15.25tn, compared with $3.61tn of long-term debt and $423bn of short-term debt. The Cayman Islands was the largest reported destination at $3.07tn, followed by the United Kingdom at $2.01tn and Canada at $1.89tn.
The increase is not a measure of purchases. The survey reports market value at two dates, so price changes and other valuation effects sit inside the difference. Treasury plans a final report with more detail and possible revisions on October 30.
