US factories

US industrial production was flat in August as factory output fell 0.3 percent

US industrial production was unchanged in August, the Federal Reserve reported Friday. Manufacturing output fell 0.3 percent after increasing for seven consecutive months.

Utilities kept the total index from declining. Their output rose 1.8 percent, while mining edged up 0.1 percent. The release puts total production 1.4 percent above its August 2025 level.

The factory decline was broad. Durable manufacturing fell 0.5 percent, business equipment output dropped 0.5 percent and construction supplies declined 0.7 percent. Defense and space equipment fell 1.2 percent.

Capacity utilization held at 76.3 percent, 3.1 percentage points below its long-run average. Manufacturing utilization fell to 75.7 percent.
