U.S. housing completions fell 11.9 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.128 million, the Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development reported Thursday. They were 27.1 percent below August 2025.
Permits fell 2.7 percent to 1.394 million but remained 3.5 percent above a year earlier. Single-family permits declined 1.8 percent to 878,000.
Starts slipped 2.6 percent to 1.275 million. The release marks that change as not statistically significant. Single-family starts rose 7.6 percent to 918,000, a move that also did not clear the published confidence interval.
