US construction spending remains 3.1 percent below 2025 through August
Construction spending totaled $1.450tn through August, down 3.1 percent from the same eight months of 2025, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.
The monthly direction is less certain. The August estimate was a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.203tn, 0.9 percent above revised July, but the survey's confidence interval includes zero.
Private construction reached a $1.655tn annual rate, up 1.1 percent. Private nonresidential work rose 1.0 percent to $773.0bn, a change whose interval excludes zero.
Public construction was nearly flat. Its estimated rate rose 0.2 percent to $547.8bn, while highway construction held near $150.6bn.
