The UK Office for National Statistics will build a separate account for artificial intelligence, putting AI production, investment, imports and use into the national accounts framework. The agency released the method Monday.

No GDP figure changes yet.

The first experimental estimates of AI compute services are planned after the first quarter of 2027. The office aims to have an account ready for production after the first quarter of 2028, with annual and quarterly figures for AI's contribution to gross domestic product and gross value added.

The office identified 23 broad product categories that now mix AI and non-AI activity. Its scope includes data centres, cloud services, chips, robotics, AI software and supporting services. Separating those products is the work ahead.
