UK consumer price inflation rose to 3.1 percent in August from 2.9 percent in July, the Office for National Statistics reported Wednesday. Prices rose 0.5 percent during the month.

Transport, particularly motor fuels, made the largest upward contribution. Goods inflation increased to 2.7 percent from 2.2 percent, while services inflation held at 3.4 percent. Core CPI, which excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, was unchanged at 2.6 percent.

The separate producer-price release showed annual input-price inflation rising to 6.1 percent and factory-gate inflation to 3.7 percent. Refined petroleum products made the largest contribution to the output-price increase.
