UK August borrowing rises to £18.3bn, £3.5bn above forecast
The UK public sector borrowed £18.3bn in August, £2.9bn more than a year earlier and £3.5bn above the official forecast, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The gap widened. Spending rose 5.0 percent to £103.1bn, while current receipts increased 3.8 percent to £89.8bn.
Borrowing for the financial year through August was £77.3bn, £2.2bn below the same period last year but £8.1bn above forecast. Net debt ended August at £2,985.5bn, or 93.8 percent of GDP. That share was 1.3 percentage points lower than a year earlier.
ONS says recent monthly borrowing estimates can be revised.
