Unemployment rates fell in eight states and DC as four states added payroll jobs

Unemployment rates fell in eight states and Washington, DC, in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. Rates were statistically unchanged in the other 42 states.
Payroll gains were narrower. The release found significant increases in California, up 39,400; Wisconsin, up 11,800; South Carolina, up 10,800; and New Mexico, up 5,500. The other 46 states and the District had no significant monthly change.
The national unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent. South Dakota had the lowest state rate at 2.0 percent, while the District had the highest at 5.7 percent. Ohio's 3.3 percent rate was the lowest in its series dating to 1976.
