South Korea's consumer price index rose 3.1 percent in August from a year earlier, the Ministry of Data and Statistics said Wednesday. The rate was 2.8 percent in July.
Prices rose 0.2 percent from July. The all-items index reached 120.05, with 2020 set at 100.
Core inflation accelerated more sharply. The index excluding food and energy rose 3.4 percent from a year earlier, up from 2.6 percent in July, and increased 0.2 percent for the month.
This was broad enough to matter. The core reading strips out two volatile categories and still ran above the headline rate.
