Richmond Fed factory index slips below zero while services flatten
The Richmond Fed's manufacturing index fell to minus 2 in September from 4 in August, while its separate service-sector revenue index rose to zero from minus 8.
Factory orders weakened. The manufacturing survey put shipments at minus 5 and new orders at minus 6. Employment moved the other way, rising to 7 from minus 2.
The non-manufacturing survey showed demand at 2, nearly unchanged, while employment fell to 2 from 8.
These are diffusion indexes, not output totals. The Fifth District covers Washington, DC, Maryland, the Carolinas, Virginia and most of West Virginia.
