The Reserve Bank of India raised its policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent on Wednesday and moved its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening.

The rate vote was unanimous. Two of the six members wanted to keep the stance neutral. The central bank said the new stance means rate cuts are off the table in the near term and the next move can be another increase or a pause.

Inflation drove it.

The RBI projects consumer inflation at 5.2 percent and real growth at 7.1 percent for fiscal 2026-27. It expects headline inflation to average almost 5.8 percent during the next three quarters, with food, fuel and core measures all firming.

The standing deposit facility rate rose to 5.25 percent. The marginal standing facility rate and Bank Rate moved to 5.75 percent.
