Malaysia's industrial output rose 4.7 percent as mining contracted

Manufacturing carried the gain.
Malaysia's industrial production rose 4.7 percent from a year earlier in July, the Department of Statistics reported Wednesday. Manufacturing output increased 6.4 percent and electricity output rose 5.0 percent. Mining fell 3.2 percent.
Export-oriented manufacturing increased 6.7 percent. Production of computer, electronics and optical products rose 14.0 percent, while machinery and equipment output increased 14.6 percent.
The sector split matters. Factory and electricity gains outweighed a mining contraction, leaving the headline measure positive without growth across the whole industrial base.
