U.S. employers reported 7.27 million job openings in July, up from a revised 7.18 million in June, Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed Tuesday. Hiring moved the other way, falling to 5.05 million from 5.33 million.

Movement slowed on both sides.

Total separations fell by 265,000 to 5.07 million. Within that total, quits declined by 157,000 to 3.06 million, while layoffs and discharges fell by 119,000 to 1.67 million.

Openings and hiring diverged

The increase in advertised positions does not show that employers filled more jobs. The hiring series recorded the opposite move during July.

All July figures are preliminary. The bureau can revise them in the next release.
