Japan's reserve assets fell by $79.575bn in August to $1.208tn, the Ministry of Finance reported Monday morning in Tokyo. Foreign currency reserves accounted for more than the full decline, dropping $94.641bn to $994.976bn.

Most of that change sat in securities. Their reported value fell $87.773bn, while deposits declined $6.868bn. Gold moved the other way, rising $14.583bn to $124.103bn even as its volume held at 27.20 million fine troy ounces.

This is not a transaction ledger. The ministry values non-dollar holdings at current exchange rates and marks securities and gold to market, so changes in the table can reflect prices and currencies as well as purchases or sales.
