Japan's August inflation held at 1.9 percent as energy prices fell

Japan's consumer prices rose 1.9 percent in August from a year earlier, the Statistics Bureau reported Friday. The annual rate was unchanged from July, while the seasonally adjusted index was flat during the month.

The measure excluding fresh food rose 1.7 percent, down from 1.8 percent in July, while the measure excluding both fresh food and energy rose 1.9 percent over the year and 0.3 percent during August.

Energy moved lower. Prices fell 0.7 percent from a year earlier. Electricity declined 2.4 percent and gasoline fell 2.6 percent. Food excluding fresh food rose 2.7 percent, down from 3.0 percent in July.
