Renewable sources supplied 54.1 percent of electricity generated in the European Union during the second quarter, Eurostat reported Friday. The share was 54.3 percent a year earlier.

Solar led. It accounted for 41.6 percent of renewable electricity, up from 37.0 percent. Wind supplied 27.7 percent of the renewable total and hydro supplied 22.6 percent.

The data put Latvia first among member states at 97.7 percent, followed by Denmark at 94.3 percent and Croatia at 92.2 percent. Slovakia had the lowest share at 19.8 percent.

Eurostat says the measure covers net electricity production. It is not the separate renewable share of gross electricity consumption used under the Renewable Energy Directive.
