Ueda says the Bank of Japan will keep raising rates as inflation nears 2%
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said Tuesday the bank will keep raising its policy rate if the economy and prices develop as projected.
The bank raised the rate to about 1.25% last month. Ueda said real interest rates remain low at short and medium maturities, lending conditions are accommodative and underlying inflation is approaching the 2% target.
The risk balance has changed.
Ueda pointed to Middle East tensions, global demand for AI-related goods and foreign-exchange moves. He said the risk of underlying inflation overshooting 2% and damaging the economy deserves more attention than before.
The timing and pace of further increases will depend on how likely the bank's baseline outlook remains and on surrounding risks.
