Barkin says more than 60% of PCE categories are rising faster than 3%

More than 60 percent of the 180 categories in the personal consumption expenditures price index are rising faster than 3 percent from a year earlier, Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said Tuesday.

That is broad pressure. In his Baltimore remarks, Barkin said inflation risks outweighed employment risks when the Federal Open Market Committee raised rates by a quarter point last week.

Headline PCE inflation was 3.7 percent in July and the core measure was 3.3 percent. August unemployment was 4.1 percent, job growth exceeded 160,000 and layoffs remained limited, he said.

Barkin left the next move open. He said inflation could fall quickly or prove more persistent, and gave no number for any additional increases.
