Bank of Canada holds at 2.25% as tariff and oil risks rise
The Bank of Canada held its overnight rate at 2.25 percent on Wednesday. The Bank Rate remains 2.5 percent and the deposit rate 2.20 percent.
The rate did not move.
The balance of risks did. The Bank said prolonged high oil prices and elevated refinery margins have increased the chance that energy costs spread into other prices, while new United States tariffs and Canadian counter-tariffs will raise costs for some businesses.
Canadian GDP grew at a 3.3 percent annual rate in the second quarter, and unemployment edged down to 6.4 percent in July. The Bank described the recovery as broadening but said further trade action threatens its durability.
CPI inflation has hovered around 3 percent. Excluding gasoline it was 2.2 percent in July, with core measures close to 2 percent. The next decision is due October 28.
