Australia's population grew 1.4 percent in the year through March to 27,921,150, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported Thursday. The annual increase was 392,700 people.

Migration still did most of the work. Net overseas migration added 292,100 people, down 17,400, or 5.6 percent, from the prior year. Natural increase, births minus deaths, added 100,600, down 4,800.

Western Australia grew fastest at 2.1 percent. Tasmania recorded the slowest increase at 0.6 percent. The figures measure estimated resident population and remain subject to revision.
