Australia's seasonally adjusted goods surplus narrowed by A$856m to A$495m in August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported Thursday.
Exports rose A$1.71bn, or 3.7 percent, to A$47.43bn. Non-monetary gold and coal, coke and briquettes led the increase.
Imports grew faster. They rose A$2.56bn, or 5.8 percent, to A$46.94bn, led by automatic data processing equipment and non-monetary gold.
The trend measure was less narrow. It put the August goods surplus at A$1.66bn.
