Anthony Izaguirre of the Associated Press reported Sunday that Miami-Dade County officials confirmed five people were killed, three critically injured and two others hospitalized with less severe injuries after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway and struck vehicles at Miami International Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration's statement identifies the aircraft as 21 Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane that arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and overran the runway around 2 p.m. The agency says it will investigate.

Miami-Dade Rescue Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said at the county news conference that the pilot, copilot and some people in vehicles had been trapped, according to the AP. He said crews were still dealing with a fuel leak several hours after the crash.

The airport's current notice says two of its four runways are open but impacts continue. It tells passengers with flights Sunday to check directly with their airline before heading to the airport. The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, the AP reported.

The cause remains unknown. Authorities had not released the identities of those killed by 7:17 p.m.
