Alaska Air lost $1.32 a share in the third quarter and now guides to a full-year loss on fuel
Ben Minicucci, the chief executive, said the company is not satisfied with the result. Alaska Air Group's third-quarter release, filed with the SEC on October 20, shows a GAAP net loss of $147 million, or $1.32 a share, on revenue up 14 percent to $4.3 billion.
The company pointed to fuel. Economic fuel cost averaged $3.94 a gallon against the $3.75 it had expected, even as unit revenue rose 11.7 percent on capacity up 2.4 percent. On the adjusted basis the loss was $35 million, or 31 cents a share, and stripping out a tax catch-up that took 67 cents off the quarter, the company puts adjusted earnings at 36 cents, inside its guidance of zero to $1.00.
The outlook is worse. Alaska now assumes fourth-quarter fuel of $4.65 to $4.85 a gallon, $650 million above its initial plan, and guides to an adjusted loss of $2.00 to $2.50 a share for the quarter and $5.00 to $5.50 for the year. It held $3.3 billion of available liquidity at September 30.
