The Fort Myers Police Department is asking for the public's help finding a 17 year old girl and her six month old daughter, Gulf Coast News reports.

Wilbelys Lopez Candelario was last seen on Tuesday, with her daughter Marbelys Lopez, at 3650 Michigan Avenue. Officers say she was wearing a black blouse and grey trousers. The department describes her as about five feet eight inches tall and 115 pounds.

Anyone who has seen either of them, or who knows where they are, is asked to call the Fort Myers Police Department on 239-321-7700.

What the police have not said

The department has described this as a request for help locating two people, and nothing more than that has been published.

No agency has said how or why the two came to be missing. Nobody has been accused of anything. No vehicle has been described, no direction of travel has been given, and no agency has used the words endangered, abducted or foul play. None of that is asserted here and none of it should be read into the appeal.

An appeal of this kind is a statement that the police want information. It is not a statement about anybody's conduct.

Where this comes from

Gulf Coast News, the Fort Myers newsroom operating as WBBH, carried the appeal on Wednesday evening, attributing the description and the callback number to the Fort Myers Police Department.

The department itself has not published this on its own website. This desk checked the force's alert pages and found no notice there, so the appeal is carried here as the newsroom's reporting of what officers said rather than as something read directly from the police.

One detail was checked independently. The number in the appeal, 239-321-7700, is the Fort Myers Police Department's own number as published on the department's website. That check matters more than it might look, because a wrong number in an item like this would send a caller with real information nowhere.
