The Florida Highway Patrol is carrying a crash with injuries and a complete roadblock on Stringfellow Road in St. James City, which is the one road running the length of Pine Island and has no parallel route beside it

The Florida Highway Patrol dispatch board is carrying a crash with injuries in the 8800 block of Stringfellow Road in St. James City, taken at 9.41 this evening and typed a complete roadblock.

That last phrase is the part that matters. The board sorts blockages into categories, and most of what sits on it on an ordinary night reads no roadblock, unknown roadblock, or a particular lane blocked. Complete roadblock is the top of that scale, and it is what the state has typed this one.

As of 9.45 the entry showed no unit recorded as dispatched and none recorded on scene, four minutes after the call was received, so this is an early call rather than one winding down.

What makes a blockage at this spot heavier than the same blockage almost anywhere else in Lee County is that there is no way round it. Stringfellow Road is County Road 767 and it runs the length of Pine Island. A check of the mapped road network within six kilometres of the crash point returns exactly two named through routes of tertiary class or above: Stringfellow itself, and Pine Island Road Northwest, which is County Road 78 and whose nearest segment sits about a mile and a half to the north. Within a mile of the crash the only other named ways at all are twenty nine residential streets, service roads and tracks. There is no parallel route here, only side streets that end.

So for anyone south of the point, in St. James City proper, the road out runs through the blockage. The coordinates on the row place it in the Flamingo Bay area, postcode 33956, and Stringfellow continues about two miles further south from there to the bottom of the community.

The time was pinned rather than read off the entry. The board prints its stamps on a twelve hour clock with no morning or evening marker, and a check of all 66 rows on it found hours running from 1 to 12 and never above, which confirms that a stamp on this board cannot fix the half of the day by itself. What settles it is this desk's own five minute polling of the same board, which recorded nothing new at 9.39 and first carried this row at 9.44, placing its appearance within about two minutes of the 9.41.59 receipt stamp and ruling out a morning call.

What the entry establishes about the crash itself is thin. Unlike an ordinary crash row, the state's call type here carries the words with injuries, so the fact of injury is on the public record. Beyond that there is no injury count, no severity, no cause, no vehicle count, no names and no vehicle types. The Highway Patrol has issued no release, the Lee County Sheriff's Office has issued no release, and nobody has been accused of anything.

No outlet had the crash at the time of writing, which is unsurprising for a call four minutes old and is not treated here as meaningful in either direction. A search across the past day returned nothing, and Gulf Coast News, which read normally on this run, carried no mention of the road.

One caution for when the row eventually comes off. This board publishes no clearance column of any kind, so a call disappearing from it is the state ending publication of that call and carries no statement about whether the road is open. Anyone driving through afterwards should still expect crews on a two lane road with very little shoulder.
