The man killed in Friday afternoon's crash on State Road 80 in east Lee County was 86 years old and from Fort Myers, according to the Florida Highway Patrol account reported by the Fort Myers News-Press. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No agency has released his name.

This desk covered the crash on Friday while the road was still shut and while nothing beyond the state's own dispatch entry was on the public record. The developments since are an identification, an account of how the crash happened, and a correction to where it was.

On the sequence, the Highway Patrol told the News-Press that the man was driving a Hyundai Accent and turned left in front of an oncoming Ford work van, which struck the car on its right side. The van was driven by a 43 year old man from Alva who was not injured. No charge has been announced against anyone, and nobody has been accused of anything. The report is by Laura Layden and was published on Saturday.

WINK News reported the same afternoon that a small white car and a white work van were involved, that one westbound lane was blocked and that traffic later resumed normal flow. Witnesses described hearing a loud noise, and an off duty paramedic stopped to help.

On the location, the outlets place the crash west of Iozzi Court, near Buckingham Road, at about 3.30 in the afternoon. The state dispatch board recorded its call at 4.10 and, part way through the afternoon, replaced its first location with the junction of Old Olga Road, moving its published coordinates nearly three kilometres east in the process. Mapping the two together puts the outlet description within about 260 metres of the board's original coordinates, on the Hawks Preserve stretch of Palm Beach Boulevard. The board's first position was the accurate one.

State Road 80 is a divided highway posted at 55 miles per hour on this stretch, with a great many driveways and side roads meeting it between Fort Myers and the Alva and Olga side of the county. It is repeatedly described by outlets covering Lee County as among the most crash prone roads in the county.

The road reopened on Friday evening.
