Southwest Florida International is the clearest monthly read anybody gets on how many people are actually coming to Lee and Collier counties, and the July number is the kind that gets reported one way and is worth reading the other. Yes, 680,168 passengers is 5.7 percent below last July. But last July was the busiest July the airport has ever had, and this July still beat July 2024, July 2023 and July 2022. Seven months into the year the airport is 2,594 passengers behind 2025 out of more than seven million. That is a rounding error, not a downturn, and the Port Authority puts it at 0.04 percent. For anyone whose income depends on visitors, and in this region that is a long list running from restaurant owners and short-term rental hosts to charter captains and the people who clean the condominiums between guests, the useful conclusion is that the summer softened at the top rather than the bottom. The record is gone; the floor has not moved. Summer is also the airport's quiet season by a wide margin. RSW moved more than 1.5 million passengers in March and fewer than 700,000 in June, so a July figure tells you about the shoulder of the year rather than the season that pays. The number to watch is not this one but the January to March run, when the seasonal residents and the northern visitors arrive and the region finds out what its actual year looks like. Two smaller lines in the same release cut in different directions. Aircraft operations at RSW fell 3.5 percent, roughly in line with the passenger fall, which suggests airlines trimmed flights rather than flying the same schedule with emptier aeroplanes. Meanwhile Page Field, the general aviation airport in south Fort Myers, recorded 14,968 operations in July, up 30 percent on last July. Those are takeoffs and landings, not passengers, and private and training flights are counted alongside business aviation, so it is not a visitor number. It does mean considerably more traffic over the neighbourhoods on that flight path than a year ago. One line matters for every property owner in Lee County regardless of whether they ever fly: the Port Authority states plainly that no ad valorem property taxes are used for airport operation or construction. The airport runs on airline fees, parking, concessions and federal grants. A slow month at RSW does not land on a Lee County tax bill.

Southwest Florida International Airport handled 680,168 passengers in July, a fall of 5.7 percent from the same month last year, according to the Lee County Port Authority, which runs the airport.

The figure appears in the authority's news release 26-17, issued on August 27. The same release puts year-to-date passenger traffic down 0.04 percent against 2025.

The authority's monthly passenger chart, updated the same day, supplies the comparison. July 2025 recorded 720,973 passengers, the highest July in the airport's history. The 2026 total for January through July stands at 7,135,854, against 7,138,448 for the same seven months of 2025, a difference of 2,594 passengers.

Measured against earlier years rather than against the record, July 2026 was the airport's third busiest July. It sits above July 2024 at 677,137, July 2022 at 671,225 and July 2023 at 670,818, and below July 2025 and July 2021, when 814,471 passengers came through during the post-pandemic surge.

Delta carried the most passengers in July at 166,696. American followed with 127,968, Southwest with 127,170, United with 113,151 and Breeze with 51,087.

Aircraft operations at RSW totalled 6,129 for the month, down 3.5 percent from July 2025. At Page Field, the general aviation airport the same authority operates in south Fort Myers, operations reached 14,968, an increase of 30 percent. Operations count takeoffs and landings rather than passengers.

The release states that the airport served more than 11.1 million passengers in 2025 and ranks among the top 50 United States airports for passenger traffic. It also states that no ad valorem property taxes are used for airport operation or construction.

The release offers no explanation for the July decline and none is asserted here.
