The Lee County Sheriff's Office says the grass fire near Bayshore Road in North Fort Myers has been contained and that there is no risk to the public.

That update was posted by the sheriff's office on its own account, directly beneath the notification it sent earlier in the afternoon warning five streets to be ready to leave. It is the first time in this story that the agency has given an outcome in its own voice rather than through a newsroom. Gulf Coast News carried the same update at 5.47 p.m., attributing it to the sheriff's post.

The potential evacuation notifications sent to residents on Aqua Vista Lane, Deuce Road, Ace Road, Pioneer Road and Wayne Drive were lifted earlier and remain lifted. They were never mandatory. They were a warning to be ready to leave, and that warning is finished.

Crews were still working the ground after that. WINK News, in a report from the scene stamped 6.35 p.m., says the fire burned about 20 acres and is 90 percent contained, with firefighters moving through charred brush hitting hot spots and brush trucks refilling with water near Pioneer Road before heading back out. The command post is set up near Sabal Palms.

Those two accounts do not say quite the same thing, and this brief does not pretend otherwise. The sheriff's office says contained. WINK, filing later, says 90 percent contained with crews still working. Both are given here with their sources. What they agree on is the part that matters to the five streets: the fire is not moving toward homes, and the people who were told to be ready no longer need to be.

The agencies working the fire have names for the first time. WINK reports that North Fort Myers crews are on it along with Lehigh Fire Rescue brush trucks, and that Bayshore Fire water tenders have been refilling and heading back down Pioneer Road. Through the earlier stages of this story no agency had been named, and this desk declined to name one.

The cause remains under investigation. That is a status rather than a finding, and nothing has been ruled in or out by anyone.
