New York pauses permits for large data centers for up to a year
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed Executive Order No. 62 on Tuesday, pausing state environmental permits for new hyperscale data centers for up to one year. It was reported by Anthony Izaguirre at The Associated Press, and covered independently by Amy Green, Ajani Stella and Dan Gearino at Inside Climate News. The order covers projects drawing 50 megawatts or more.
Four hyperscale data centers already operate in the state. Applications are pending for 39 more. The order directs state regulators to develop standards addressing electricity demand, water use, air quality, noise and effects on disadvantaged communities. Hochul said the pause gives the state time to build a framework protecting ratepayers, the environment, the energy grid and communities. New York is the first state to impose a statewide moratorium of this kind.
