Naples says 30,000 gallons from a 330,000-gallon wastewater release entered the Gordon River

In short

A Florida Department of Environmental Protection filing says about 30,000 gallons from a 330,000-gallon raw wastewater release entered the Gordon River. The release stopped Wednesday evening, while recovery and repair work continued.

WINK Digital Team at WINK News reported Thursday that a wastewater line failure at the City of Naples Water Reclamation Facility released an estimated 330,000 gallons of raw wastewater.

An updated Florida Department of Environmental Protection filing says about 30,000 gallons entered the Gordon River.

The release stopped Wednesday evening

The state record says the release began at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday from a 30-inch raw feed line. Preliminary findings indicate that a 2-inch direct tap failed.

Crews closed the facility's east and west influent lines at 5:51 p.m., stopping the release. The filing says most of the wastewater remained in the facility's stormwater swales and two ponds.

The city initially estimated that about 1,000 gallons reached the Gordon River. The updated filing raised that estimate to about 30,000 gallons after further assessment of the stormwater pond and river interconnect and flood wall ports.

Recovery and repair continued

The filing says city vacuum trucks had recovered about 20,000 gallons from the stormwater system. Recovery work continued, laboratory personnel collected samples at two water-body entry points and in the stormwater ponds, and emergency repair of the raw feed line remained in progress.

The state record marks the release as no longer ongoing. It does not announce a drinking-water or swimming advisory.
