Lee County Utilities is carrying three boil water notices again, and two of the three are planned shutdowns rather than breaks

Anyone drawing Lee County Utilities water on Handy Court or in the Harbour Yacht Court buildings should boil it for a minute before drinking it, cooking with it, making ice or brushing teeth, and anyone at 577 or 585 Keenan Avenue or 12540 McGregor Boulevard should expect the same instruction from 9 a.m. Tuesday. That is the whole of the urgent part. The reason this is worth a separate item is that the county has gone from an empty map to three records in about two days, and the last thing this site published on the subject said nobody on county water was being asked to boil it. Two of the three are not emergencies, and the county's own classification says so. The layer carries a coded field with three values, and it separates an emergency shutdown from a scheduled one. Handy Court is the only record coded ESD, an emergency shutdown behind a two inch water main repair, and the county dates the service interruption to 6 p.m. Sunday, which puts it at roughly seventeen hours standing by late Monday morning. The other two are coded SSD, scheduled shutdowns, which means the utility took the water down deliberately for planned work and issued the precautionary notice alongside it. The Harbour Yacht Court job is a two inch service repair that started at 9 a.m. Monday, and the Keenan Avenue job is a fire hydrant replacement that has not started at all and is dated 9 a.m. Tuesday. A resident reading a count of three active notices would reasonably assume three failures, and one is a failure, one is planned work now under way and one is planned work due tomorrow. There is a practical difference between the two counties worth stating, because it decides whether a resident can answer the question at all. Cape Coral publishes polygons and no street lists, so a Cape Coral household has to open a map and find its own address inside a shape. Lee County publishes the addresses. The Harbour Yacht Court record names 11057 through 11089 and counts what is inside it, twelve multi-family buildings holding forty eight units, and the Keenan Avenue record names both house numbers and the McGregor Boulevard address that goes with them. That is a smaller number of people than the Cape Coral notices touch, and they can each tell in one line whether they are in it. One timing note that matters for anyone checking the map at night. The county states on every record that notices are updated daily by 4 p.m., and all three of these were entered by the same account inside a twenty minute window on Monday morning, which is how a Tuesday shutdown comes to be visible on a Monday. The map is a daily posting rather than a live feed, so a record appearing is not the same as an event happening, and the incident date on the record is the field that says when. The county's own guidance on duration is unchanged and is printed on each record, that a boil water event typically runs twenty four to forty eight hours but can be longer and may last several days. The four notices this site reported cleared on August 1 all landed within forty five minutes of the two day mark.

Lee County Utilities has three boil water notices on its public map on Monday morning. On Saturday it had none.

The three are not the same kind of thing, and the county's own layer is what separates them. It codes each record as an emergency shutdown, a scheduled shutdown or a rescission, and only one of Monday's three is an emergency.

That one covers Handy Court, all of it, behind a two inch water main repair. The county dates the loss of service to 6 p.m. Sunday, which had it standing about seventeen hours by late morning.

The other two were planned. A two inch service repair took the water down at 9 a.m. Monday across 11057 through 11089 Harbour Yacht Court, which the county describes as twelve multi-family buildings containing forty eight units, and a fire hydrant replacement is scheduled to do the same at 577 and 585 Keenan Avenue and at 12540 McGregor Boulevard from 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The Keenan Avenue notice is therefore on the map before the event it describes. All three records were entered by the same county account inside a twenty minute window on Monday morning, and every record on this layer carries the line that notices are updated daily by 4 p.m., so what a reader sees is a daily posting rather than a live position.

The instruction is the same in each case. Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before drinking it, cooking with it, making ice or brushing teeth, or use bottled water instead.

This site reported on August 1 that Lee County Utilities had cleared all four of the notices it had been carrying, at 8844 Fordham Street, 18048 Cypress Point Road, 181 Lagoon Drive and 2148 Dover Avenue, and that the map had shown nothing active since Friday morning. All four of those still carry their rescissions, and none of them has reopened. The three new records are separate incidents at separate addresses.

Two other systems serve this area and neither is included in the count above. Cape Coral runs its own utility and had three active areas of its own on Monday morning. The City of Fort Myers layer returned nothing.

A precautionary notice is not a finding that anything is wrong with the water. It is issued when main pressure drops, whether the utility dropped it on purpose or a break did, and it is lifted after bacteriological samples come back clear. The county prints its own expectation on every record: twenty four to forty eight hours is typical, longer is possible, and several days happens.
