Lee County Sheriff's Office K9 Dundee died early Monday while helping deputies during an apprehension in North Fort Myers.

The sheriff's office announced the death in an official statement. The agency says Dundee joined LCSO in February 2024 and was certified for patrol and narcotics detection work.

Carson Zorn and Jaylen Baron of Gulf Coast News report that the apprehension followed an overnight response in the Island Vista Estates area. Their account of the sheriff's briefing says Dundee became unresponsive after the apprehension.

Dundee completed 174 deployments during his service, according to LCSO. The agency credits him with 28 apprehensions.

The incident is over and there is no active public-safety instruction for residents.
