The Lee County Sheriff's Office says it has arrested a 44 year old man over the skeletal remains found in March in a hidden grave behind the county elections building, and says the elections building itself had nothing to do with the case

The Lee County Sheriff's Office says it has arrested a 44 year old man in connection with a death whose only public trace, until now, was a set of skeletal remains found in March behind a county government building in Fort Myers.

The agency says its Major Crimes Unit arrested Gabriel Carlo Leon-Torres over the death of a man whose remains were discovered in a hidden grave behind the Lee County Elections Center. The arrest was reported by WINK News, whose report is the source for this item.

According to that report, a medical examiner determined the death was a homicide. Leon-Torres is charged with second-degree murder and with tampering with physical evidence.

The sheriff's office says the investigation began when it received a tip about a missing person. That tip eventually led detectives to the buried remains, which were later positively identified as the missing man. The report does not name him.

"An arrest is a critical step but this case is far from over," Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in the announcement. "I want to recognize the Major Crimes Unit investigators who have worked relentlessly to uncover the truth, follow every lead and build this case piece by piece. Their persistence, professionalism and commitment to justice have been unwavering. We will not stop until every question is answered and the victim and his family receive the justice they deserve."

The sheriff's office has stated that the Lee County Elections Center has no involvement in this investigation. The remains were found behind the building. The agency's position is that the location is where a body was concealed, and that the facility itself is not part of the case.
