Layza Pinero Resto of Gulf Coast News reported Saturday that the Fort Myers Police Department says a suspect died after an officer-involved shooting in the 2300 block of Katherine Street.

The department's account, as published by Gulf Coast News, says officers received a call for service at about 5.48 a.m. and that the shooting followed.

Fort Myers Police had not published a standalone public statement on its website at publication time. Separate WINK News and News-Press reports also carried the shooting and death, but this brief relies on the linked account from Gulf Coast News.

Police say the suspect was taken to a hospital and later died. The department has not named the person or the officer, and its published account does not describe the call or the encounter that led to the shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation, according to the department. Police say the officer was placed on administrative leave under department policy.

No road closure, evacuation or continuing public instruction appears in the department account published by Gulf Coast News. The reported shooting and hospital transport are over, so this brief does not carry an active breaking flag.
