The man accused in July's I-75 standoff in Lee County was released by the Lee County Jail on Thursday and is now in the custody of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office

The man accused in the standoff that shut down Interstate 75 in Lee County in July is no longer held by Lee County.

WINK News reported on Friday morning that jail records show the Lee County Jail released Ladavion King on Thursday, and that he is now in the custody of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. His Lee County jail record now reads "released."

That record entry does not mean he is free. WINK reported that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office confirmed King is still in the hospital, where he has been since the standoff, and that he will be booked into its jail once he is discharged.

Investigators say King killed a woman in St. Pete on July 22 and then drove south on Interstate 75. They say Florida Highway Patrol caught up with him near the Alico Road exit, that a trooper bumped his truck and caused it to crash, and that law enforcement exchanged gunfire with him before he was taken into custody. He was hospitalized after being shot.

Those are the accounts investigators have given. Every charge arising from them is an accusation that has not been tried, and nothing in this custody change bears on guilt.

One point is left open here rather than resolved. The killing is placed in St. Pete, and the homicide case has been a Pinellas County matter in this site's earlier coverage of it. The transfer reported on Friday is to Hillsborough County. The account read for this item gives no reason for that, and neither county's records could be read this morning to establish one, so no explanation is offered.

The underlying records could not be read directly. The Lee County Sheriff's Office publishes a public bookings feed, but it returns only the twenty most recent bookings, all of them from Friday, so it is not a searchable roster and holds nothing on this case. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrest inquiry timed out rather than returning a page. The custody change therefore rests on the account credited above, in which the outlet reports reading the jail record and separately reports a confirmation from the receiving agency.

A motion hearing in the Lee County case was reset to August 26 at 8.30 a.m. after two postponements, each because King could not be produced from the hospital. Nothing readable this morning addresses what Thursday's release does to that date.

The interstate closure connected to this case was in July and ended the same day. Nothing in this item affects current travel on I-75.
