The first reporting from outside the state's own dispatch board has arrived on the Interstate 75 fatality at Naples, and it fills in three things this desk has had to describe as unknown all afternoon.

Gulf Coast News reports the Florida Highway Patrol saying that a person died in the crash on Interstate 75 northbound at mile marker 111 in Collier County. It reports the Collier County Sheriff's Office saying the crash involved a van and a box truck, and that deputies had two people being treated for injuries.

Until this evening the public record on this call was a single word. The state board publishes a type, a location, three timestamps and a remarks line, and when it retyped the call to a fatality shortly after six it gave no number killed, no number hurt, no vehicle count and no vehicle types. This desk set that limit down each time rather than reading anything into the label. Those three gaps are now filled, and they are filled by the two agencies working the scene rather than by inference.

The road itself has not changed, and that is the part to act on tonight.

The state board at 6.56 this evening carried the left northbound lane as blocked with the right and center lanes open, which is the identical row it has carried since shortly after half past five. The receipt stamp of 4.29, the dispatch stamp of 4.30, the arrival stamp of 4.40, the county, the location string and the published coordinates are unchanged as well. Nearly two and a half hours after the call came in, one of three northbound lanes is still down.

The outlet report says the interstate was shut down. It was, and this desk covered that closure when it stood, but it ended in the half hour after half past five and it is not the picture now. What is left is the slower kind of blockage: one lane gone on a three lane interstate, a queue that drains rather than a road that is closed, and a scene the state is carrying as a fatality, which is worked as an investigation rather than cleared as a wreck. No estimate of a reopening has been published by anyone.

The reporting also settles where this is in terms a driver can use. Twice today this desk declined to name an exit, because none could be confirmed and a wrong exit is worse than none for someone trying to plan a way around. The Sheriff's Office has now placed the crash near Immokalee Road, and the coordinates the state publishes for the scene fall at that interchange, so the two accounts agree rather than merely failing to conflict.

What is still not known should be stated as plainly as what now is. No cause has been offered by any agency. No names or ages have been released. It is not known who was in which vehicle. Nothing on the record says how badly the two people being treated for injuries are hurt. Nobody has been accused of anything, and no fault is stated or implied here by anyone.
