The Interstate 75 fatality at Naples has taken every northbound lane again, a second full closure of the same call that entered the state board between 7.19 and 7.24 this evening after almost two hours in which only the left lane was down

The Florida Highway Patrol has closed every northbound lane of Interstate 75 at mile marker 111 in Naples for the second time today, on the same call that has been open since shortly after half past four this afternoon.

The state board carried the left lane alone as blocked, with the right and center lanes open, from shortly after half past five through a reading at 6.56 this evening. This desk reported that state at 7.00 p.m. and said then that one lane down on a three lane interstate is a queue that drains rather than a road that is closed.

That is no longer the picture. On two readings a minute apart at 7.25 and 7.26 this evening, the row reads that all northbound lanes are blocked.

The change can be placed fairly tightly. The state publishes no stamp for when it edits a row, but this desk polls the same board every five minutes, and the poll at 7.19 did not see this state while the poll at 7.24 did. The reversal therefore went onto the record somewhere in those five minutes, roughly three hours after the crash was first received.

For a driver the practical point is that a reopening earlier in the evening is exactly what would lead someone to assume the interstate is moving again. Northbound at that point, it is not. Traffic behind mile marker 111 has nowhere to go on the interstate itself while this stands, and the nearest major surface crossing is Immokalee Road, at the interchange the Collier County Sheriff's Office has already placed this crash near. No agency has published an estimate of when the lanes come back. None published one during the first closure either.

Nothing else about the call has moved. The receipt stamp of 4.29, the dispatch stamp of 4.30 and the arrival stamp of 4.40 are unchanged, as are the county, the location string and the published coordinates. The state is still working the call as a fatality rather than clearing it as a wreck, which is the kind of scene that gets closed and reopened on the investigators' timetable.

Why it shut again is not on the record, and this desk is not going to invent a reason. There is no indication anywhere in the state's record of a second crash at the scene or of anyone further being hurt, and none is suggested here. Investigators working a death do take a road back down for reasons that have nothing to do with a new event.

The limits from earlier in the evening all still stand. No cause has been offered by any agency. No names or ages have been released. It is not known who was in which vehicle. Nobody has been accused of anything, and no fault is stated or implied here by anyone.
