The Fort Myers Police Department responded on Saturday afternoon, July 25, to a crash involving a vehicle and an e-bike at the intersection of State Road 82 and Colonial Boulevard.

WINK News reported that the e-bike rider was transported to a hospital for treatment, and that the intersection was closed temporarily while crews worked to clear the scene. The station's account, published in the middle of the afternoon, is the only report of the crash we could locate.

Police did not release the extent of the rider's injuries, did not describe the circumstances of the collision, and have not attributed fault to the driver or to the rider. That last point matters: nothing that has been made public establishes who did what, and this brief is not suggesting otherwise.

The location is the part with the wider relevance. State Road 82 is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard within Fort Myers and continues northeast toward Lehigh Acres and Immokalee. Colonial Boulevard is State Road 884, one of the principal east-west arterials in the city and the route most drivers take between Interstate 75 and the eastern half of Lee County. The junction of the two carries substantial volume, and it has no easy parallel alternative, which is why closing it even briefly to clear a scene pushes traffic onto residential and secondary streets.

There is a broader point behind a single crash of this kind. An e-bike travelling through a signalized arterial intersection is operating in traffic moving at arterial speeds, and under Florida law it is treated as a vehicle at that crossing rather than as a pedestrian. Junctions like State Road 82 and Colonial Boulevard were laid out around cars, and a rider there has the same right to the lane and far less protection in a collision.

On status and sourcing, two caveats. The closure was described as temporary and the scene was being cleared at the time of the report several hours ago, so the reasonable assumption is that the intersection is open again, though no reopening notice was issued. And there is no public primary document behind this brief: the Fort Myers Police Department has not posted an incident release, and Florida has no keyless public feed for municipal road closures, so this account rests on WINK News reporting, credited and linked above, rather than on a document we can point readers to. Anyone with information about the crash should contact the Fort Myers Police Department directly.
