Fort Myers police say a person was found dead inside a Maravilla Avenue apartment and that a barricaded man, named by the department as Aaron Spencer, 23, was killed in an officer-involved shooting

The Fort Myers Police Department has said what came of the Maravilla Avenue scene it worked on Wednesday morning, July 29, and two people are dead.

According to the department, the information it received indicated that a person had been killed at an apartment complex, and that a subject was armed. Officers found a dead person inside.

The department says that on arrival officers found a barricaded subject, whom it named as Aaron Spencer, 23. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and Spencer was killed.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which the department describes as standard procedure any time an officer discharges a firearm at a scene, rather than a disciplinary step.

Layza Pinero Resto of Gulf Coast News reported the department's account. Reporters at the scene described more than a dozen police vehicles, along with undercover vehicles, a drone in the air and a SWAT vehicle.

The southbound roadblock the department put in place on US 41, which is South Cleveland Avenue, between Maravilla Avenue and Halgrim Avenue has been lifted. Because no closure and no instruction to residents or drivers is outstanding, this item carries no breaking flag.

There are limits to what has been established, and they are worth stating plainly.

The person found dead inside the apartment has not been named. The department has not said whether it believes Spencer was connected to that death, and no such finding has been announced by any authority. Nobody has been charged in connection with either death.

Spencer is dead, and so he will not be charged, will not stand trial, and cannot respond to anything said about him. Everything above is what the Fort Myers Police Department says it found and did, and none of it is a finding about his conduct.
