Dozens of people gathered outside the Luminary Hotel in downtown Fort Myers on Wednesday night, over reported immigration enforcement activity across Southwest Florida.

WINK News reporter Alex Orenczuk reports the rally ran for about three hours, with chanting, signs and flags. No arrests were reported.

An organiser named in that report as James Abraham told WINK the demonstrators were there because of what Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been doing, saying the agency was "laying siege to whole communities". A protester named as Gordie Daig told WINK the continued behaviour allowed in the country right now was bizarre. Both descriptions are theirs.

The Luminary Hotel and Co. issued a statement saying it respects the right to peaceful expression, that safety remains its top priority, and that the property is prepared to take additional steps if necessary.

What is confirmed and what is not

WINK reported that it confirmed an ICE presence through video of a detention near Summerlin Road and Park Royal Drive.

It separately reported accounts of enforcement activity at other locations, including Interstate 75 and Six Mile Cypress Parkway, and described those as unconfirmed. They stay unconfirmed here.

WINK said it contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and no response from the agency appears in its report. Nothing in this item represents that agency's account of any of it, because it has not given one publicly.

On Wednesday afternoon a man was detained outside a Lee Health facility in Fort Myers, with neighbours across Southwest Florida reporting enforcement activity in their areas. The rally on Wednesday night was the response to it.

Nothing has been announced that affects access to the riverfront or to the hotel. The Luminary statement is a private property saying it is watching, not notice of a closure or a restriction.
