Florida health officials cautioned residents to avoid water where a visible bloom is present in the Faka-Union Canal Basin near 16th Avenue SE, WINK News reported Wednesday.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection record confirms a bloom was observed at the site Monday. The sample contained mixed algae with no dominant species. The record says cyanobacteria were not dominant and toxin results were pending Wednesday afternoon.
Residents and visitors should not drink, swim, wade or use personal watercraft in water showing a visible bloom, WINK reported from the health notice. The guidance says to keep pets and livestock away. It also says boiling bloom-affected water does not remove algal toxins.
What changes for residents
The caution remains active while testing is pending. People near the basin should treat visible blooms as off limits and keep animals out of the water.
