A student at Coronado High School in Fort Myers has been arrested and accused of bringing a firearm onto school property, the Lee County Sheriff's Office says.

What the Sheriff's Office says happened

Deputies say that on Wednesday a school resource officer was alerted to concerns involving a student who reportedly had access to a firearm.

When the student arrived on campus, according to the Sheriff's Office, a routine backpack check turned up a handgun holster, Glock backstraps and an empty ammunition box. A backstrap is the removable grip panel at the rear of that make of pistol.

A K9 was then called to the scene and, deputies say, alerted to the presence of a firearm in the student's vehicle. A search of the vehicle is described as having produced a Glock 17 handgun, three magazines and additional ammunition.

Detectives arrested Christian Viard, 19, after an investigation, the Sheriff's Office says. He faces charges of possessing a weapon or firearm on school property and interference with school administration functions.

What has not been said

The Sheriff's Office has not said who raised the initial concern or how. It has not said whether the handgun was loaded, whether it was ever carried into a building, or whether any person was threatened. The district's own renewal paperwork for the school describes it as serving students who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out, which is why an enrolled student can be 19.

The name is easy to confuse. There are better known Coronado high schools in Lubbock, Texas and in Coronado, California, and a search for the name alone will surface those first. This is the Lee County school on Cleveland Avenue.

There is also an older case that is not this one. WINK News reported in December 2023 that a 19 year old was arrested over a loaded gun at Coronado High School. That is a separate matter from a different year and it has no established connection to Wednesday.
