The Florida Highway Patrol has given its account of the fatal Davis Boulevard crash in Naples, and troopers say they are looking at whether a medical episode came first

The Florida Highway Patrol has released an account of the Wednesday morning crash at Davis Boulevard and Heritage Trail in Naples that it had earlier reclassified as a fatality.

A 63-year-old Naples man died, troopers say. He was driving a Chevrolet in the left turn lane, heading west on Davis Boulevard and approaching the Heritage Trail intersection. A 22-year-old North Fort Myers woman was stopped in the same turn lane directly ahead of him in a 2022 Toyota. The Highway Patrol says the front-left of the Chevrolet struck the rear-right of the Toyota at 10.25 a.m.

The man was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead. The woman was not hurt.

Troopers say they are investigating whether the man experienced a medical episode before the crash.

That is worth stating carefully. It is a question the Highway Patrol has said it is asking, on its own account, and it is not a determination of what happened. No cause has been established, nobody has been charged, nobody has been accused of anything, and the agency says the crash remains under investigation. Nothing here should be read as assigning responsibility to any person.

No name has been released for the man who died, and none is published here.

This account was reported by Gulf Coast News, credited above, and every fact in it is attributed to the Highway Patrol. The agency has issued no release document on the crash and no crash report is public, so there is nothing to link to as a primary source. This desk had earlier reported the fatality from the state dispatch board, which is a record of what is open on the road rather than an account of what happened on it.

The two clocks agree. Troopers put the crash at 10.25 a.m. The state board logged it at 10.36 a.m., eleven minutes later, which is the ordinary gap between an event and a call reaching dispatch.

Davis Boulevard is one of the main east to west routes across Naples, and Heritage Trail meets it in the residential stretch east of the city. The road blocked for part of the morning, narrowed to the turn lanes in each direction, and cleared during the afternoon. The record has now dropped off the state board altogether, so nothing remains for a driver to route around.

One thing carried over from this desk's earlier item can be closed. A WINK News report about a death in a motorcycle crash on Davis Boulevard in East Naples surfaced in searches on Wednesday and could not be retrieved at the time. It has since been read. It is from February 2019 and concerns a different crash. It is not connected to this one.
