For a Collier Area Transit rider, the practical answer for now is that this is a change of employer at the depot rather than a change to the timetable. County leaders told WINK News that riders should not expect service interruptions through the transition. That is the county's expectation and not a guarantee this site can test, so a rider whose commute depends on a single route is better served by checking the published schedule in the first fortnight of October than by assuming either outcome. For the 151 people named in the notice, the position is harder and worth stating precisely, because a WARN notice is widely misread. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires an employer of a certain size to give advance written warning of a mass layoff or plant closing. What MV Transportation filed on July 30 is that warning, covering 151 employees in Naples with separations dated September 30 through October 13. It records positions that could end when the contract ends. It is not a record that anyone has been dismissed, and in a contract handover of this kind the same work usually continues under a new employer the following day. That is why the union's questions are the ones that matter rather than the headline number. Kevin Smith of the Transport Workers Union of America told WINK News his concern is whether wages and benefits carry over and whether the incoming operator recognises the union, and that there are not strong protections in law that guarantee those terms survive a change of contractor. Business Observer reports 128 of the 151 employees are union members. Two things follow. A driver who transfers to the new operator may keep the job and still lose seniority, accrued leave or the pay scale bargained over two decades, because those sit in an agreement with the outgoing employer rather than in the job itself. And an employee who is offered a post on materially worse terms faces a choice the WARN count does not capture at all. Smith also made the point that this depot has been through the same transition four or five times, and that it has worked out each time, which is a reasonable base rate and not a promise. The scale is worth holding in view. Measured against every WARN notice filed in Florida this year, 151 is a small share of a large total: the state list carries 197 notices for 2026 covering 13,907 employees. Measured locally it is not small. Among the seven Collier and Lee notices on that list this year it is the second largest, behind the 235 at Naples Grande Beach Resort in January and ahead of 135 at Peterson Brands in Fort Myers. For a two county labour market this is one of the larger single filings of the year, and it lands in a specific trade. These are commercial drivers with passenger endorsements, dispatchers and schedulers, and their next employer in the same county is most likely the firm taking the contract, which concentrates the outcome for all of them on one company's hiring decision. WINK News reports that it asked both MV Transportation and WeDriveU whether current employees will be offered positions and that neither responded. That silence is the open question in this story. Until one of them answers, or the county publishes terms that address staffing, nobody outside those companies can say how many of the 151 keep working on Radio Road in October. The county record is also worth watching for a second reason. This site was unable to retrieve Collier County's own procurement file for the operations contract, so the award date, the contract value and any staffing or wage conditions written into it are not established here. Those conditions are where a county can, if it chooses, require an incoming contractor to interview incumbent staff or hold wage floors for a period. Whether Collier County did so is a fact on the public record that has not yet been read out, and it would change the answer for 151 households.

MV Transportation filed a state layoff notice on July 30 covering 151 employees in Naples, as its contract to run Collier Area Transit approaches its end.

The notice sits on Florida Commerce's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification list for 2026, the state's public register of advance warnings employers are required to give before a mass layoff. Its entry gives the employer as MV Transportation, Inc., the city as Naples, and the separations as running from September 30 through October 13.

Business Observer reported the filing on August 4. Its account places the jobs at the transit facility at 8300 Radio Road and lists 112 drivers, seven dispatchers, four customer service representatives, two road managers and one scheduler, which accounts for 126 of the 151 positions. It reports that 128 of the employees are members of the Transport Workers Union of America, and that a company representative said an earlier version of the filing mistakenly referenced Capital Area Transit System and that corrected notices naming Collier Area Transit were provided.

WINK News, reporting on August 7, says WeDriveU is expected to take over Collier Area Transit from MV Transportation later this fall, with the contract change expected at the end of September, and that county leaders say riders should not expect service interruptions.

The union's concern, as its international representative Kevin Smith put it to WINK News, is what happens to terms rather than to the buses. He said his questions for the incoming operator are whether it will recognise the union and whether it will take on all of the employees, and that little in federal labour law guarantees that wages and benefits bargained with one contractor survive a move to another. He also noted the depot has been through four or five such transitions before.
