The National Weather Service has placed coastal Lee County under a High Surf Advisory through 8 a.m. Saturday.

Large breaking waves and dangerous rip currents are expected. The related rip-current risk remains in effect through Saturday evening.

The advisory also covers coastal Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties. The Weather Service says high surf can cause localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

Swimmers should stay near a lifeguard and follow local beach flags. Anyone caught in a rip current should float, avoid swimming against it and move parallel to the shoreline if able.
