If you are in Charlotte County and you have an emergency, call 9-1-1. That was the right instruction during the interruption and it is the right instruction now that service is back. Gulf Coast News reported at 2.08 p.m. that phone service has been restored to both the 9-1-1 line and the administration lines, about seventy minutes after it reported the fault. During the interruption the county's stated position was that the fault was in its own telephone system, that calls were being routed temporarily to the Lee County 9-1-1 center, and that dispatching would continue. Nothing in that window is known to have failed. For non-emergency business the county gave two numbers for Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Administration, 941-769-2495 and 239-478-4852. The first is a Charlotte County area number and the second is in the 239 code that serves Lee and Collier. The county did not explain the difference. The sheriff's office separately publishes 941-639-2101 on its own website for Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, and that number is not part of the county's notice. What still cannot be told to you is how long the fault lasted or what caused it. The outlet does not give a restoration time, a start time or a cause, and none of the three will be supplied by inference. What is known is the visible window: the interruption reached the public at 12.58 p.m. on Tuesday and the restoration at 2.08 p.m. The county said it would issue an update when the issue was resolved, and the update that exists is the outlet's. Through the whole of it the county published nothing on any channel it controls. Its news feed carried no notice while finding time to post a traffic advisory at 1.21 p.m., the alert bar on the county homepage read only Burn Ban Rescinded and Water Restrictions, and the sheriff's office website carried nothing. That gap matters as much as the fault did, and it did not close when the phones came back. A 9-1-1 telephone interruption is the one category of county announcement that belongs on the county's own front page while it is happening, because the residents most likely to need it are the least likely to be checking a television station's website.

Phone service has been restored to both Charlotte County's 9-1-1 and administration lines, Carson Zorn at Gulf Coast News reported in an update at 2.08 p.m. on Tuesday, about seventy minutes after the same outlet reported that an interruption in the county's telephone system was disrupting 9-1-1 calls.

The county said that 9-1-1 calls will be temporarily routed to Lee County while the issue is resolved, and that the outage will not prevent emergency services personnel from being dispatched to an emergency. Residents needing Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Administration were advised to call 941-769-2495 or 239-478-4852. The county said it would issue an update when the issue is resolved.

Nothing further has been established, and it rests on the outlet.

There is no primary document behind the county's statement. The Charlotte County government news feed carried nothing on the interruption an hour after the outlet published, although the same feed posted a traffic advisory about overnight lane closures on Kings Highway at 1.21 p.m., and the alert bar on the county homepage listed the rescinded burn ban and water restrictions and nothing else. The sheriff's office website carried no notice. The county's separate 9-1-1 site at e911.ccso.org would not load at all. Neither WINK News nor the Charlotte County section of the Daily Sun had the item, so Gulf Coast News is the whole of the public record on it for now.

That is also why there is no cause here, and no start time. The county did not say what failed, when it began, or how many calls have been affected, and none of the three will be supplied by inference.

Nor is there a duration. The outlet does not say what time service came back, only that it has, and it does not say when the fault began. The interruption reached the public at 12.58 p.m. and the restoration at 2.08 p.m., which brackets the part of it that was visible rather than the fault itself. This item no longer carries a breaking flag, because the condition that flag records, an event happening now, has ended.

The county published nothing on either the interruption or the restoration on any of its own channels while both were current. The restoration rests on the outlet exactly as the interruption did.

The sheriff's office publishes 941-639-2101 as its number for Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, alongside 9-1-1 for emergencies. That number is on the sheriff's own site and was not part of the county's notice.
