Gulf Coast News carries the same account, reporting one dead in a two vehicle crash at the same junction and, citing the sheriff's office, five people taken to hospital with lanes closed. The two newsrooms agree on every checkable point: one dead, five hurt, two vehicles, Cemetery Road at Dana Road, Wednesday night, roads closed, and the patrol investigating.

Trauma alert is a triage classification responders use when injuries are serious enough to have a trauma team waiting on arrival. It is the more specific of the two descriptions and it is the one carried here.

A correction to what this desk said earlier

This desk reported earlier on Wednesday evening that the road had reopened. That was wrong, and the correction is the reason this item leads where it does.

The basis for it was the state dispatch board, which stamped its third timestamp column on this call at 7.34 p.m., about forty five minutes after the crash was dispatched at 6.49 p.m. That column records the Florida Highway Patrol closing out its own dispatch entry. It does not record a road reopening, and treating the two as the same thing was an over-reading.

Two things make that clear now. A forty five minute clearance is far too quick for a fatal crash, where a traffic homicide investigation holds a scene for hours, and the patrol says through both outlets that it is still investigating. And the closure itself is being run by the sheriff's office, which is a different agency. Sheriff's road work does not appear on the patrol's board at all, so the board falling quiet says nothing about whether deputies still have the road shut.

The board's remarks field, for what it is worth, still reads that all lanes of Cemetery are blocked, spelled CEMETARY in the original. That is the text a trooper entered when the call opened and the board does not rewrite it as a scene changes, so it is not independent confirmation of anything. But it is not evidence of a reopening either.

Treat the road as closed until an agency or an outlet says otherwise.

What the agencies have not said

Cemetery Road is a county road rather than a state road, and county and city streets usually do not appear on the state board at all. This one does, which is what happens when the patrol takes a call in unincorporated Lee County. The caution holds in the direction that matters, and tonight it matters a great deal: an empty or quiet board for Lee or Collier means no state road incident is posted, and never that a road is clear.
