The School District of Lee County has lifted the pause it placed on moving Buckingham Exceptional Student Center in April and will now consolidate it with Royal Palm Exceptional Center on the Royal Palm campus, with the combined facility due to open to students in August 2027

The School District of Lee County is going ahead with the consolidation of two of its exceptional student centers, four months after putting the plan on hold under pressure from parents.
The district has told families it will lift the pause and establish what it describes as a state-of-the-art flagship Exceptional Student Education center on the Royal Palm Exceptional Center campus, combining it with Buckingham Exceptional Student Center. The move was reported by WINK News on Wednesday morning.
The combined campus is expected to open to students in August 2027.
There is no public district document behind this brief. The decision was communicated to parents directly, and the district's own news index carried no item on it when this desk checked on Wednesday morning. What follows rests on the two newsrooms that reported the decision and on the district statement they were given.
The pause began in April
The district halted the plan in April after Buckingham parents and staff objected to the relocation and questioned whether the Royal Palm campus could meet the specialized needs of Buckingham students.
WGCU reported at the time that 77 students with medical special needs attended Buckingham, and that the objection turned on accessibility modifications and specialized equipment that parents said Buckingham had and Royal Palm did not. Royal Palm serves students with behavioral needs.
WGCU also reported in April that some families were pursuing conversion of Buckingham into a charter school under Florida statute, and that the district said it would consult with the leaders of that effort on their respective responsibilities in accordance with the statute. Neither report published this week says what has become of that effort.
The district says the feedback changed the plan
Chuck Vilardi, Regional Associate Superintendent, said the district paused the process in April in order to listen, reassess and ensure it was creating an environment that puts the safety, dignity and specialized care of its students first.
He said the district heard from families what they want, incorporated those ideas into its plan, and looks forward to continued collaboration to build a model ESE facility that serves the unique needs of every child.
The revised plan, as the district describes it, combines specialized programming from both campuses into a modernized facility, with specialized physical modifications, integrated behavioral and educational support, and a focus on real-world independence.
What happens between now and 2027
The district says it is launching a structured transition process to keep families informed. Parents and guardians will be invited to take part in a series of meetings and committees, and the district says stakeholders will receive monthly updates.
The coming school year is not affected. The change takes effect when the combined campus opens in August 2027.
