Bokeelia has no water north of Pineland Road while a main is repaired, and the utility says the boil water notice starts running only once the taps come back on

Greater Pine Island Water Association turned the water off to Bokeelia residents living north of Pineland Road at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday to repair a break in its main, and told them it cannot say when service will return.

The association's notice, posted to its own site and stamped 1.30 p.m., says it will work until the water is restored "but we cannot give an exact time frame of when that will be."

The part worth reading twice is what happens after that. The utility says residents will be under a precautionary boil water notice for a minimum of 48 hours once the water does come back on, not 48 hours from now. If service returns this evening, the boiling instruction runs into Saturday evening at the earliest. If it returns tomorrow, it runs into Sunday.

The instruction is for water for consumption only, in the association's words. That covers drinking, cooking, ice and brushing teeth. The utility has not asked anyone to stop using water for flushing or bathing.

None of this is a statement about water quality. A precautionary notice follows a pressure loss during a break and repair, which is when intrusion into a main becomes possible, and it is lifted on bacteriological test results rather than on appearance.

WINK News, which reported the outage, puts the number of people affected at around 1,200. The association publishes no count of its own with the notice, and no map or street list either, so an address sitting close to the Pineland Road line is a question for the utility rather than one this brief can answer.

Bokeelia is at the north end of Pine Island in unincorporated Lee County. Its water comes from Greater Pine Island Water Association, a member association, rather than from Lee County Utilities or a city system, which means the notice will not appear on a county or city boil water map. The association's own notice page is where it has been publishing this one, and it is where the lift will appear.
